The view from the ramparts

A little bit of history

Grenville Battery is one small piece in a vast ring of military defences, built around the city of Plymouth and its vital naval dockyard. There are at least 70 main sites around the city, known collectively as the "Ring of Fire".

This part of the website is split into sections:

The Bigger Picture gives you a short introduction to the overall history of the area, and where Grenville fits in.

The Fort tells you about Grenville's construction and military usage, up to 1947

Recent History is a summary of some of the uses that Grenville has had since the military left

The "Grenville History Record" is incomplete. There is a lot of interesting research to be done, to add to what we already know about this fascinating location.
